I am re instaling XP on my flatmates pc. He has xp media centre version 2002
but no disk. I have xp pro edition disk. Will I be able to use his licence if
i use my disk to re install XP on his machine.

No, it only works if you have *exactly* the same disk - same version, same
licence.

I don't believe there is a "Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002". There is
a "Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004" and "Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005", however.

In any case - no... Your Windows XP Professional CD - even if the same type
(OEM, Retail, Upgrade, MSDN, Volume License) will not substitute for their
Windows XP Media Center Edition (2004 or 2005) Product Key/License. Most
likely - when that machine was sold to your flatmate, it was either sold
with restoration media, an actual installation CD/DVD and/or some internal
method of installing Windows XP Media Center Edition in case something went
wrong and it had to be done.

You will want o contact the original manufacturer of said machine to find
out how tro do this per their instructions. You may have to purchase the
media from them. You can usually find such information on their support web
site.

No, this will not work. The install keys will not match, and your XP Pro
version is already activated. As well, you can't do a repair install to an
MC edition with a PRO CD.

You need to either find the install media or partition for his sytem, or get
him a proper license.

Check the manual and/or contact the computer manufacturer for restore
procedures
Some OEMs use a hidden partition for that purpose.

You may need get replacement media from the manufacturer.

No, it wouldn't work. Product Keys are bound to the specific type
and language of CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with
which they are purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key
won't work for any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of
WinXP Pro, and vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with
a full version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an
English CD. Bottom line: Product Keys and CD/license types cannot be
mixed & matched.

Have you flatmate contact the computer's manufacturer to obtain a
replacement WinXP MCE installation CD.
