I'm a prison librarian who has been given an excellent library
circulation and inventory setup using Access97, from another
institution. It was developed by an inmate, and the documentation is a
little lacking. When the discs were sent to me they had the data from
the developing library removed, so the tables for books and patrons
are empty. Unfortunately the designer did not take this into account,
so the drop downs that add/delete/edit books and patrons returns an
error message. I was told this was corrected in a later version, but
that I could work around it by opening the tables and entering a dummy
book and patron on the first line of each table, and herein lies my
problem. I can't seem to change the mode to where I can open the
tables. The designer has a customized command bar. Right clicking
everywhere on the screen does nothing. F11 and a few other keyboard
combos do nothing. They sent me the discs with both MDB and MDE files,
and I know the latter can't be changed, so I've been using the MDB
file. I did see the designer do this once, and I know he toggled into
design mode by using either a shift-key or shift-mouse action, but I'm
afraid I don't recall what. If anyone can help me I sure would
appreciate it.

Try holding down the <Shift> key while you're opening the database -
i.e. if you have the database icon on your desktop or a folder, hold
down <Shift> and doubleclick it.

It's possible that the developer blocked that too - if so there's a
way around that block; email me if you need it.
