What advantage does the LGA775 have over the a socket 478?
Thanks
I did a quick comparison of the pinout of the two sockets,
and the difference is, there are more power and ground
signals for Vcore. This will help carry whatever power that
new processors require. Of course, the Vcore circuit on any
motherboard has limits, so some day, an LGA775 processor could
be released that draws too much power for your motherboard
to sustain. The current VRM/VRD specs have an "A" and "B"
load line for Prescotts, and the Asus boards that support
Prescott, support both. But, that does not stop Intel from
introducing a new load line for some future LGA775 processor.
An advantage for Intel, is the CPU packaging is undoubtedly
cheaper for them to produce. The socket is more expensive,
but the motherboard manufacturers are stuck with the cost.
So, in that respect, the Intel engineers are having a good
laugh. And, if anything is going to break, it will be the
socket. You must be careful not to contaminate the pins, so
don't touch them while the socket is open. Contamination is
less of a problem with a ZIF socket, unless you spill your
favorite beverage on it
