I have the above printer and it has worked perfectly for the last two years
with Windows XP. Since XP SP2 was downloaded I have had massive problems. I
uninstalled the SP2 package, downloaded the drivers from Lexmark including
the patch. I may be a bit thick but my machine starts to install the printer
okay and then the machine crashes. I've executed the patch and then tried to
install again but no success. I also get several messages stating my
computer is recognising new hardware, Image and Printer.

Please, please could someone help before I completely dump my printer and
buy a new one. It was working perfectly and it seems a shame to get rid.

Get the "uninstall clean utility" for the printer. Then, delete the
drivers in the usual way. Next, use the utility to clean up. Shut down
the computer and disconnect the printer. Restart the computer and
install the new drivers and patch according to the instructions.

Let us know.

I have followed these instructions several times to no avail. My machine
still crashes. From the replies I have seen on this site it appears that the
Lexmark printers are the main source of problems. Surely Lexmark should take
these problems on board and redistribute a more up to date download instead
of patches. I will avoid buying one in future although my printer worked
perfectly in XP before this SP2 package was installed. If you have anybody
has any more ideas please help me.

I too have experienced these problems. It seems that this family (the
X series) of Lexmark printers have issues with Windows (all
varieties). I purchased an X73 several years ago and had problems with
it from the start. I finally got it to work with Windows 2000 (simple
fix I fell into -- unplug the power cable and plug it back in -- who
would have thought?). When I wiped my hard drive clean for Windows XP,
it worked beautifully. Then I had a major hard drive failure and
bought Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

My Lexmark now functions as a scanner only. Sometimes it prints a
partial page, but most of the time it doesn't. I have spend hours on
the phone with Lexmark, only for them to tell me that it's my hardware
(1. it worked before, and 2. every other peripheral works on those
same usb ports). At the same time, I have gone back and forth through
email with Lexmark.

In every case, I get a different "Try this...try that" -- I have
dutifully tried each of Lexmark's suggestions, all to no avail. I have
suggested to Lexmark that if I lived in a multi-story dwelling, either
I or the machine would have perished by now (highly likely it would
have been the X73).

As I type this, my X73 still serves as only a scanner. The Lexmark
folks cannot resolve this issue. I am considering purchasing a Canon
multifunction. It's time anyway -- the print quality of the Canon's
are superior (I never was impressed with the "photo quality" of the
Lexmark, but it scanned good and printed when necessary, most of the
time).

I have given up. Good luck. Sorry I didn't help you fix your problem.
The only way I can see things getting better is to try something else.
After all, your goal really is to be able to print, scan, and copy.
And if your current printer cannot do it, without the untold hours
already spent trying to get it to work, try something else.
