Lexmark won't print

Ever since I switched to WinXp, my lexmark Z52 had been behaving badly.

Among other problems, it now does not print in black, all I see are faint
impressions.

Prior to this it could still print if set to highest resolution, but from
today, no more.

I cleaned the print cartridges, black came out on the page all right,
almost, only a bit missing on the first line. Another clean gave perfect
result. Printed test page, only windows logo in color, no words.

I took the both cartridges out. The black one has ink to stain a blotter.

I put them back in. The black numbers on the page to check alignment printed
crystal clear. Printed test page, and only windows logo showed.

What can be wrong?

Maybe I'm coming into this thread late so just a thought. Have you
updated the drivers from Lexmark? Just curious as Lexmark has one mombo
update driver, mpmoinxe.exe, that covers most of their printers and
OS's. Seems as though it should work after successfully printing a
test/alignment page. Also take a close look at your printers properties
from XP control panel. Lexmark driver installation has been a pain when
using XP. I've gotten mine to install, but it wasn't pretty. I took
notes down because I was afraid I'd not remember all that I did to get
the drivers to work in XP. Microsoft has some sort of fix, possibly
interim only, for printer installation, but you have to ask them for it
as it appears to not have been fully ready for the public. I don't have
it yet. Good luck.

I've actually downloaded and tried the drivers from both MS and Lexmark
sites, months (a year?) ago. Even wrote Lexmark, but they said that that was
it, it being that the new driver is so generic I lost all the good things
the ME driver did, like speech announcements, real-timeprint print progress,
print both sides etc, etc, etc. I couldn't even get the new driver to
install compatible with ME, becasue there is no appropriate .exe or .dll
file to make compatible.
Someone from another group gave me a link to lexmark, and the file seems to
be different so I'm going to try this one more time. The printer itself is
good, fast, good quality output, seems a pity to chuck it.
