Hello all,

I hope someone can help. I just got an optra s printer as is. The
machine itself is very good. But the print is where the problems begin.
When I print a test page I get a page that is fairly unreadable. I get
ghost images and a repeating black imprint going across the page. I
talked to a local repair shop that does lexmark printers. They said it
is the toner cartridge. When I mentioned about the imprint going across
the screen he said that it was the drum and that i should replace the
toner cartridge. From the way he said it it sounded like the drum is
part of the cartridge.

If replacing the cartridge is what i have to do then fine. But if it
starts to cost $$$ then I rather sell it for parts and try to get
better. BTW I was able to get a menu printout. I nearly fell off my
seat when I saw the page count as 290K.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you need a tune up first. Bet you haven't cleaned the
printer . . You can get reman. cartridges for $100 on ebay or have it
refilled by someone.

Excellent advice. Ghost images can also be caused by a build up on the fuser
rollers. I've owned several print shops and customers frequently mentioned
this problem to me after they had run offset printed forms through their
laser. There are basically two types of printers ink. One is rubber based
and often used by smaller duplicator shops. Under the heat and pressure of a
fuser roller the ink will transfer to the roller and then offset to the next
sheet. Oil and acrylic based inks don't have this problem and can be used
for laser printed forms. Lexmark Optras (I've had two and still have one)
are very good lasers. Replacement toner cartridges aren't terribly expensive
if purchased from online vendors. You might also want to look into a
replacement fuser unit. If you are handy with tools and somewhat patient, a
fuser unit isn't too difficult to replace.

So would it be better to replace the toner first see if that helps or
just go right to the shop to have a cleaning done to it? Thing is
everytime I look at doing that see 5 cnotes going bye bye If i'm
looking at the then i'd rather sell for parts and get a better machine
with less wear on the machine. IE less then 100k prints.

This is for you to decide how much you want to spend if you spend $500
then you'll have virtually a new printer. Go out see if you can find a
printer that for $500 is as good the your optra S
First i'd have it cleaned they'll tell you what needs to be replaced
A company called ECO REZ based in Vancouver, Toronto, has a $80
Canadian special on right now for tune ups

I think you said the printer only has 290k pages on it so far. These printers are
rated at 40k or so per month so at 290k it is barely broken in. I have seen this
things run for millions of pages with no problems.
