I get an error that a function driver is missing and this
unit will not install in a windows 2000 professional
environment. I receive this message as soon as the usb is
plugged in. I am open to any suggestion. I have upgraded
bios, and checked everything I know to check.

Possible causes
BIOS settings for USB
Partially installed USB drivers. (Some systems install one driver, reboot,
and install another.)
Missing or outdated USB drivers for the support chip set on your
motherboard.
Outdated or incorrect printer driver version for your windows version.

I usually start by uninstall ing any existing printer drivers, followed by
the USB drivers. Reboot into "safe" mode or the troublershooting mode. Make
sure no duplicates exist that relate to the USB ports or Printer drivers.

Reboot, and reinstall the approprite USB drivers, and reboot again.
Additional drivers for USB might need the second reboot to install.

Reboot again. CHeck to make sure that the proper USB drivers are installed
and not flagged in device manager.

Follow the Printer Mfrs directions EXACTLY when you install the printer
drivers.
