Lexmark Disappointment

John E. Flatley, Jr.

Unlike John and his disappointment with his Z65, I had good service
out of mine. (until it gave up the ghost!)

I replaced it with the Lexmark X6150 Multifunction machine. I pleased
with the product and the ease of use.

(Disclaimer: Lexmark is an off-shoot of IBM. I'm a retired IBMer. I
was part of the System Assurance testing for various products in the
PC line in Boca Raton, Florida. I spent the earlier part of my IBM
career in Field Engineering. I learned customer requirements and
expectations. I learned the techniques to meet those requirements and
expectations. My job, salary and promotions depended on my success
understanding and meeting those requirements.)

I have problem with my X6150. Not a big problem, I eventually found a
work-around, but it is an unresolved problem. And in my not-so-humble
opinion the Lexmark Tech Support sucks!

I print Crescent-sized (8.75" x 5.75") envelopes. I print 2 or 3
Crescents a week. The first time I tried to print a Crescent
envelope, Microsoft Word told me the envelope margin was outside the
printable area of the page! My envelopes had been formatted years ago
with Word Mail Merge. They had printed correctly on various Laser and
Inkjet printers without error. Envelopes formatted with a current
document produced the same error message and the same misprinted
envelopes. Only the last line of the return address block printed.
And it printed up against the left edge of the envelope. The
addressee block with the zip bar code printed correctly, only it was
shifted left.

The problem apparently turned out to be the 8.75" width of the
envelope. The printer(driver) is limited to envelope document widths
of 8.5" even though the envelope is printed in landscape mode. I lied
to the printer by specifying the width of the Crescent envelope as
8.4". This lie allowed the envelope with correctly positioned address
blocks to print as laid out and without the error message.

So I have a work-around. In spite of Lexmark Tech Support!

I could not find any telephone support. So I sent my first e-mail to
Lexmark on 10/23. 37 hours later I got a response from Jai, telling
me how to set the margins (gosh) and that the problem must be in
Microsoft Word.

I responded to Lexmark support with addition information that I found
in looking for a solution. I sent this response, my second e-mail, to
Lexmark support, and got an answer in about 48 hours. This new
response, from Umesh, to my second e-mail, again told me how to set
the margins and said I should contact them if I need further
assistance (ha!)

I sent a third e-mail, again with additional detail and suggested
tactfully that RTFM was not a satisfactory response and asked what was
the next step I should take to resolve my problem.

It has been almost 72 hours. No response yet! In the meantime, with
additional trouble shooting, I got a clearer definition of the
problem, and thus a work-around.

I have bought my last Lexmark product. I certainly will not recommend
them to friends. (Maybe CompUSA had a good reason for dropping the
Lexmark line.)

Sorry for the long post, it did relieve some frustration to write and
send this.

Well, i've had two Lexmarks - one Z23 and one Z33. And that's because whole
printer was cheaper than one single cartridge! So, after first one went
empty, i got second one. But finally, i got tired of having almost new
printers in stock, so i got myself Canon i550. I was pleased with Lex print,
with except printing to the edge, which just sucks (i mean, leaving 15 mm at
the bottom is just unacceptable these days!). But when i got canon, printout
is so much better i couldn't even imagine. And not to mention i550 can do
borderless printing.
So, i have two Lex machines - my last ones - at home for garbage. Like you,
never again. At least i learned my lesson: don't look for price of the
printer, look the price of ink! ( I did try to refill with no luck)

Only thing that bothers me at Canon is that looong startup initializing
before actual printing... i mean really, people, is absolutely necesarry to
clean head EVERY time i start to print? And when it finishes, it takes so
long like it's driving heads all the way to Russia and not only a few cm to
the right. However, so far this is only minor problem, which a man gets used
to it.

(((To shorten reply, i erased original, sorry for that, John)))
