What are the extensions (the three letters AFTER the dot) in the file
names?

Gordon,
All there is a Name followed by "file"

the thing that amazes me is that you actually have a 51/4 disk drive at all!
Where are you looking at these files? If in Windows XP have you enabled file
extensions in Tools-Folder Options-View?

Gordon,
I am using XP Pro.

There WILL be an extension - all files have them. In Windows Explorer, go to
Tools-Folder Options-View and UNCHECK the box that says "Hide extensions for
known file types".

then you should be able to see the file extension, which might give a clue
as to a) the program the documents were written in and b) a method of
reading them properly.

Gordon,
I am using XP Pro. When I recieved these floppies I told myself "no way"
then I remembered I had an old computer with that old drive, so I installed
it on the 3.5 floppy cable, enabled it in the BIOS and I was able to access
the files but the only way I can get anything is by using Notepad but it is
mixed with Code. This elderly lady is a longtime family friend and she is
still missing her daughter terribly and I would really like to be able to
save thses documents for her. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the trial software from <http://www.acii.com/ff.htm> to see what
word processor produced the files.

I finally was able to open the files although I wasn't able to find an
extension. They were written on an experimental computer at the time for
Quadruple amputees using an early version of WordPerfect. I was able to
transfer the files to a floppy 3.5 disk and then to open them and print
them. I appreciate all the response from all who offered. This story is
truly sad for all who knew her and her parents will appreciate my efforts I
am sure.

Sincerely

JCW
