Letter W is cutoff on navigation overlays

Hi Chris,

I'm assuming that you're using a theme and if so, you'll need to edit the
graphic from the Theme editor (Format | Theme | Modify)

I created a vertical navigation bar for my website. ANY
page title that begins with the capital letter "W" is
cutoff. I'm using the Arial font. When looking at the
overlay for the button I can see that FP has cut the top
left portion of the W off. I then exported the overlay
and then fixed it in Photoshop and replaced the file in
FP. FP promptly crashed and will not restart without a
reboot. After rebooting, the image is still cutoff when I
view the page in the browser, but not inside FP itself. I
have a feeling this is due to the file in the _derived
folder. However, I cannot open this file. Does anyone
have any idea how to fix? I must say that alternatives to
FP are looking pretty good right now. The site is not yet
posted, so I cannot provide a link to the site.

Thanks!
Chris

Try removing the theme and reapplying it

If on a disc based web you can delete the _overlay and _derived folders
- also clear all Temp and *.web files
Then reopen the web to run tools recalculate hyperlinks

If the "bad" W persists the I would upgrade my directx and video driver
- only other corruption we have seen w/ video drivers is certain nvidia drivers

Didn't help as I expected. It appears to be a problem
with the Radial theme which was the basis for my
customized theme. It's easily reproduced by creating a
two page site, apply the Radial theme, and rename one of
the pages in Navigation view to begin with the capital
letter "W" (Windows for example). The top left of the "W"
will be cutoff.

Unfortunately the included themes in FP seem to be geared
toward grade school websites as opposed to corporate
websites. Add this to the many 'quirks' in FP and I've
decided to give up on it. So, I think I'll download a
demo of Macromedia Dream Weaver and give it a try.
Goodbye Frontpage!

Chris

Your problem is not Frontpage (and your solution is not Dreamweaver).

Your problem is B.K.A.C.

Themes is themes, pal.

Did you buy a coloring book then complain that the pages don't look like
fine art when you put them on your wall?

If you want a better theme, buy one. Don't rely on what came free.

If you want an even better looking site, hire a graphic designer.

Oh, and aren't you the professional. You really
contributed to the solution didn't you. It's not whining
moron, it's frustration with yet another MS product that
doesn't work as advertised. I'm not alone.

I sincerely appreciate help received in any newsgroup
when people help you find a solution to a problem. I
don't appreciate people reading half your post and then
firing off a quick answer in efforts to make their
numbers look good for MS. This problem has nothing to do
with the graphics in the theme as the first post
recommended. That should have been obvious if the post
was read.

The second post, while I thought unlikely to resolve the
problem, I tried it anyway. Am I happy with FP, no, so
instead of fighting with people like you on the
newsgroup, I'll use a different product. Big deal.

And finally, you can bet my site will look much more
professional than yours. And if you can create a QUALITY
website in 15 minutes, then you're much better off than
the rest of the world.

Get real.

Chris

Very -

Okay, one good term, er, turn, does another:

Read The F***ing Manual.

Okay, Very, I've never heard of this one. What's B.K.A.C., please?

Thanks,

Your problem is B.K.A.C.

Themes is themes, pal.

Did you buy a coloring book then complain that the pages don't look like
fine art when you put them on your wall?

If you want a better theme, buy one. Don't rely on what came free.

If you want an even better looking site, hire a graphic designer.

Try removing the theme and reapplying it

If on a disc based web you can delete the _overlay and
_derived folders
- also clear all Temp and *.web files
Then reopen the web to run tools recalculate hyperlinks

If the "bad" W persists the I would upgrade my directx
and video driver
- only other corruption we have seen w/ video drivers is
certain nvidia drivers

I gotcha... that one is for the history books too, isn't it? Now we'd have
to say RTFOH (Read The Fine Online Help).

Then again it might be *slightly* different.

Are you saying that Themes don't use graphics?

For the record, I started with one of the non-
professional themes included with FP and added my own
graphics where needed. Mainly in the header of the page
and the buttons. If it were up to me I'd build the whole
thing in Photoshop and not mess with FP at all. But,
customers get what they want and they want it done in FP
so they can manage it thereselves. They will not let me
do it in DW, so were stuck with this. Guess I'll put an
asterick in front of the letters or something to work
around this since you all are soooo helpful.

This problem is present in several of the built in themes
in FP.

I'd like to know how FP generates the overlays for the
buttons since it's obvious that in some themes the
algorithm is cutting the characters a bit too close to
the left, thus it cuts 2 pixels of the letter off.

I can't believe that you people will spend so much time
trying to make someone look bad instead of trying to help.

Chris, I'm sure most would agree that the themes included in FP are designed
to get the amateur going in a hurry. Your problem is not FP, but the theme.
Since you are capable of creating your own designs and graphic images, I
would suggest that if your client requires that you use a theme, and you are
not satisfied with the one you are using, that you create your own.

If this is not feasible, I think it would be easier for us to see your
problem (and help you with it) if you could get it published. You could
possible use a free host or webspace provided by your ISP until you are
ready to obtain hosting for your client. I tried using a couple of different
FP themes and starting a page name with a W, but could not duplicate your
problem.
