Panda - I am an IT professional and a registered user of Panda Platinum 2005
Internet Security. I'm very tempted to uninstall it and ask for a full
refund of the money I have paid you. Your software keeps popping up ads for
upgrading to what I assume is some other product offered by your corporation

I ASSUME it's an ad for a Panda product, as I can't even read most of it.
It pops up in a window that is partially off the screen, and the text is
garbled. It also BLOCKS the active window, so that it interferes with other
programs! I can't get rid of it, because I can't read it (and therefore
there is nothing to click on to get rid of it) I've reviewed all settings I
can find in your software, and there is no way to turn it off these annoying
pop-up ads, that I can find.

I wouldn't mind the spam forced onto my screen by your software so much if
it wasn't INTERFERING WITH ALL OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING ON MY COMPUTER!!!

My computer is loaded with dozens of gigabytes worth of software, and ALL of
that software works perfectly, EXCEPT for your product.

If you don't have a solution to this problem, I will need a full refund of
the money I have paid you, as your product is definitely DEFECTIVE.

They offer a free virus scan. Unfortunately it requires IE and ActiveX.
That seems sort of like "I'm sorry, we can't check you for an infection
unless you actually choose to infect yourself."

Report back about your success.

Have you tried f-prot?

Hmm. I wonder if this is actually Panda doing this. My niece's
PC had a virus that none of the free AV programs could deal with. She
had me install Panda Platinum 2005 using her friends CD. I couldn't
register it to get automatic updates, but it did allow me to do a
manual update, and it rid her PC of the virus.
We left Panda installed to help protect her PC, but I usally
do manual scans of her system when I go to my brother's house, and
never see pop-ups from Panda. Do you have the pop-up blocker on?

I don't see how the problem relates to homebuilt computers.

There's no relation at all, if you intend to use your homebuilt computer for
Internet use without a software firewall OR an antivirus program

Not only that, but I ran the free scan on a friend's computer that WAS
infected with a virus. The free scan found the virus and refused to do
anything with it, other than report that the virus was there. (how helpful)

I haven't tried f-prot. CA is supposed to have a pretty good security
suite. I might try that next. I use outlook express as I have not been
able to find an alternative that *I* like. But my web browser is
refox. -Dave

I personally prefer the free version of AVG myself.

Yup, it's panda. When the ads pop up, I can read enough of them to
determine that it is SOME kind of panda program that's being pushed. The
annoying thing is, the ads pop up at any time, whether I'm using the
Internet or not. When I AM using the Internet, I use firefox web browser
with popup windows blocked. I also have adblock installed and configured
with firefox, so I don't see a lot of the ads in web sites, either.

But imagine you are editing somebody's resume for them using WordPerfect,
and a window pops up with an ad for Panda Software. The Window forces
itself to the foreground, blocking WordPerfect. You can't get rid of the
window, as there is nothing to click on. You can't save your work until you
get rid of the popup ad that you can't get rid of. Pretty fricking
annoying, to put it bluntly. -Dave

Been using it forever. Great AV software and it's free. ;-)

Panda's a Scientology-run company. While they might have had some footage
in the past with a select number of PCs I wouldn't touch 'em with a ten-foot
Xenu prod.

I use Trend's A/V, as part of the Fix-It Utilities suite. No infections in
years. Detects and cleans a good amount of spyware too - though I still
recommend the full arsenal of Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, and the
inevitable MS Anti-Spyware.

Or even better, don't use Windows.

If I was the ONLY computer user in the family, it would be running linux. I
dual-booted for a while. But even if you dual-boot, you still need a
firewall and antivirus program to protect windows. -Dave

How do you know it's their software popping up ads?
for upgrading to what I assume is some other product offered by your corporation

So you have no idea if it's one of their products.

Since you're an IT guy, why don't you figure out if it really IS their
stuff, or some other spyware you've been infected with. It'd make your
case a lot stronger.

The few words I can read are (beside the panda bear logo) "Panda", "upgrade"
and "today only"

What they want me to upgrade TO, I have no clue, as the rest is too garbled
to read. But even if I couldn't read anything, the Panda logo kind of gives
it away. -Dave

I found that the only online scanner that will try to
disinfect, or delete is Trend Micro's House Call. Unfortunatlly, it
seems unable to detect alot viruses, and malware that other scanners
find.

Or even better, don't use Windows.

When all software developers start supporting other OSes, then
I'll switch, but when that happens, all OSes will be riddled with the
same problems.
