Letter text not merging in Contact

I created a template for a "thank you" letter with header/footer and some
text. I can select Action --> New letter to contact and invoke the template
from the pull down list in the wizard, but clicking FINISH displays only the
header/footer and the contact particulars (name, address etc) NOT the text
from the template. What am i doing wrong, or do I just not understand what is
SUPPOSED to come over?

You cannot load boilerplate text in the body of the letter template. You
must create AutoText entries for the boilerplate. The easiest thing to do
would be to create one template and load the text for each letter under its
own style -- see KB article Q207925 (OL2000).

Take a look here for some other ways to merge Contact data to a new letter
to a Contact:

Thank you for the prompt reply - I obviously expected this to work like the
letter writing feature in Telemagic, so I'll follow your instructions and use
Auto Text here.
