Letter "I" no longer works - temp fix?

M Skabialka

One of our users has a laptop where the letter "I" no longer works. It is
under warranty so will be fixed within a day, but is there a keyboard
shortcut like "Ctrl", "Alt", "Shift" and some combination of numbers (or
something else that will work on a laptop) that he can use temporarily?
Other than copy-paste from some text he already has?
Thanks,
Mich

How does this work on a laptop? There is no number keypad. I tried it and
Alt 0073, and used Alt-Shift 105 to no avail.

You may want to review the laptop manual if you don't see some key
labeled Numlock.

I've never seen a laptop without an inbuilt number keypad but I will admit
I've not seen every laptop ever made. My Compaq and most other laptops have
a "fn" key, mine is between the ctrl and windows flag key in the lower left
side of the keyboard and the fn is blue. It's used to turn on the numpad
keys which are also blue. When invoked the 7 displays a numpad 7, 8 an 8, 9
a 9, 0 a period, U is the same as a numpad 4, I a 5, O a 6 and P a minus and
down the keyboard. Those numbers also are blue.
Have you ever used a laptop?

You could remap, i.e., the Caps lock key to the i key.

To do that, create a file named MapKey.reg out of the below text

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,17,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
;end

Right click on the file > Merge > reboot.

Create another file named UndoMapKey.reg to restore the caps lock function.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=-
;end

Right click on the file > Merge > reboot.

If nothing else works, try the on-screen keyboard accessory (osk.exe)

Yes, I have used a laptop!

I tried as you suggested, pressing Alt-Fn 0073 and Alt-Fn 105, but this does
not work.

Have you tried this on a laptop?

It's a moot point now, the keyboard was replaced under warranty, but I would
still like to know how to do this in the future.

First, enable the number pad. That is accomplished by pressing the key
combo assigned by the laptop manufacturer. That may be determined by
observation/trial and error (shift key + num key, Fn key + num key) or
by reading the manual/user guide. AFTER you have enabled the number pad,
you hold down the Alt key and press the designated numbers in the number
pad area, and then release the Alt key, at that point the desired
character appears on the screen. Then press the key combo used to enable
the number pad again to toggle it back off.
