Length of fax tones

I need to fax to a customer whose fax line has an answering message, then goes into the fax tone. How can I extend the length of time Microsoft Fax emits fax tones to get through this fax line's answering message? Does that make sense?:

Thanks so much.

Could you put commas after the dial-up fax number? They add 2 seconds
apiece for delay. The modem's S8 register says how long to delay for
the comma character (",') in the dial string. The default is 2 seconds.

I don't know, but I'll try. I guess I would like to change the modem's S8 register default to longer than two seconds too. But I have no idea where I would do that -- could you please provide simple instructions for this challenged computer person? I would be most grateful! Thank you.

Don't try changing the S8 register unless you are familiar with modem
commands. Just try adding one, or more, commas to the dialing string
wherever they are needed to wait long enough for the fax machine at the
other end to start its handshaking tones.
