Legacy Video Card Support

I was installing Windows XP SP2 on my old Packard Bell PB 9601 with 3DFX
Voodoo 3 2000 TV-Out built-in graphics card.

I was really disappointed by the "no support" Windows XP gives for this
legacy graphics card. It doesn't even show up in Device Manager. There is no
"Graphics Adapter" folder in Device Manager, nor any "Video Graphics Card"
device in the "Sound, video and game controllers" folder.

I right-click on desktop to go to display properties. It says my video
adapter is some sort of vgasave or something. There is no buttons here to
"Update/Upgrade Driver" nor any buttons to uninstall it.

So I manually did "Add New Hardware" from control panel. I manually added
3DFX Voodoo 3 device. But it's not work, or it says it cannot be started.

I did a search for +"Voodoo 3" +"2000" +"XP" +"driver" on google.com.

There are million links to 3rd party drivers of my video card. However 99%
are broken URLs from the driver collection websites. I manage to download 2
but they didn't even work after install.


Please please can Microsoft have "generic" 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 video card
drivers. Please. I beg of you.

You're surprised that there's no support for a 10 year old graphics card
from a company that went bust about 7 years ago?!

If you have a Voodoo 3, what's the rest of your system like? Is it even
capable of running XP?

Microsoft only supplies drivers in its operating systems when the
manufacturers provide them. As 3dfx is dead, the cannot supply anyone with
drivers. Contrary to popular belief, MS do *NOT* develop drivers for other
manufacturers' hardware.

I suggest you either ditch the card or, preferably, your entire system as
putting a new card in an ancient system will cause a huge bottleneck.
 
The Packard Bell is a P3 600MHz with 192MB RAM. The Voodoo 3 video card is
built into the motherboard. P3 600MHz runs Windows XP SP2 fine. No slow
downs. It runs as smooth as my other PC which is a P4 1.7GHz and my laptop
P4 1.4GHz. Voodoo 3 came out in 2000. 3DFX went out of business in 2002.
3DFX first appeared in 1996.

Hardware manufacturers and not Microsoft are responsible for drivers.
The drivers Microsoft distributes are provided by the hardware manufacturer.

If they are no help, it may be time to replace the antiquated card since the
manufacturer no longer exists.
As long as you have an open PCI slot, there are many cards available.
 
Don't listen to the tick, it's a troll that has no clue at all. I have a
similar machine that runs xp fine, no problems. Go to ebay and get a cheap
card for ten or fifteen bucks.
