legacy audio drivers

my audio quit working on my computer. Looking in control panel/ sound (if I
remember correctly) it said the drivers location is unknown.
Legacy audio, is this part of XP?
I can't access my general sound options from the lower start menu any longer
either.
Should I insert my XP disc to reinstall the drivers?
sorry but I need this info in layman terms,...

(I think "Legacy" might be the name of one of the many companies that
make sound hardware, but I'm not sure about that.)

When it says the driver location is unknown, does it give the name of
the file it can't find? If so, have you found that file on the computer?
