I sign up for the Vista Beta2 program and d/l my copy. I checked the file
with MD5, and move forward with the burn. I get about halfway through the
'loading windows files' screen, and wind up with a 0x00000e9 error. The KB
says to burn at a slower speed. I do that again.. get same error. OK, so I
have a bad d/l. Thinking I might not have the horsepower to run it, I buy a
64bit cpu and mb. New 1gig memory, an 80gig hard drive. This takes about 2
weeks to receive all the parts.

New computer... I try the install again with both disks. Same error. So, now
I have a new rig, and nothing to put on it. I call Microsoft, and ask to see
if I can buy a copy of the 64bit Vista.. but I am told they are no longer
being shipped, and that the beta period is over. Is there ANYWHERE I can d/l
a copy of the 64bit? NO replies the Microsoft sales person. WHAT?

Try explaining to YOUR wife how it feels to spend $400.00 for NO REASON.
Thanks Microsoft.

Mr. Champ--

You have a nice system. Explain that to your wife. It will give you years
of enjoyment with a lot of software coming in the Vista Longhorn wake--3rd
party included.

I have no knowledge of this, but MSFT may open up to sign up again with RC1
which will soon be available for CPP--it's a sales tool for them and they'd
be stupid not to but well I don't want to go there right now..

Be sure and try reburning. I know you used MD5 checksum but try reburning
anyway. The problem may not have been in a truncated or damaged download.

I sure agree with you that MSFT should have kept downloads available. The
only reason they cut off the program was to build desire.

I have heard that people desire some things they had but now can't get.
It's pure psychology.
It's not as if some softie has pulled his finger from wherever he has it
stuck and is holding it in the dike to keep those FTP and Akami and whatever
servers up for CPP downloads. It's inconsiderate of MFST for their
customers.

They aren't even sure what is going on with some of the DVDs they mailed out
for their last interim build. They did a rush mail test to try to find out
a few weeks ago.

I suggest you repeat burning the ISO using this CRC checker:

1) Burn slowly. Beta 2 instructions on their "get the beta" page of 1-2X,
but I have never
been disappointed with 4X. Some of this probably varies with the DVD writer
and the media.

2) Make sure to select an ISO tab if there is one on the burning software,
and make sure to close the session on the burn.

3) Try this tweak on your Windows XP drive and burn from there:

Get to Dev Manager by typing devmgmt.msc in run/win key + pause break or
Rt.click My Computer>Prop>hardware tab>Device Manager if you like 5 steps
instead of one cmd. If you're set to PMI here change to DMO and if set to
DMO change to PMI using these 5 steps:

1) Click the + in front of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
2) Double Click the Secondary IDE Controller
3) Click Advanced Settings
4) Under Device 1 Next to Transfer Mode choose DMA (or vise versa)>Click
OK
5) Reboot your System

6) Check your burn with a CRC utility and the links for this are below
including the direct Taco Bell link. It is very classy, sophisticated, and
very Wagner Edstrom/McCann Ericson esque for MSFT to ***adopt a Taco Bell
urlfor their public Beta 2 CRC checker.***
Obtain CRC Utility for Vista Beta 2 Here: (The CRC utility is a way to check
the integrity of the ISO Burn which is probably where your problem
lies--it's #1 on the list):

Here's a link. I like that the direct link from the MSFT CRC link directly
linked to a
Taco Bell link. 'Cause when I see a Taco Bell, I think of course of MSFT:
anc vice-versa, Maybe they can change the Vista start button to Taco Bell.
This has to go on my list of funny things I've collected from the MSFT site.

The CRC utility for Beta 2 is contained here (Scroll down to the bottom
under "Additional Information").

Microsoft® Windows® Software Development Kit (SDK) for Beta 2 of Windows
Vista and WinFX Runtime Components
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...73-F5EA-4B7B-B022-97755838DB94&displaylang=en

Additional Information:

To verify that your download of an ISO file for the Windows SDK Beta 2 build
is not corrupt, download the CRC Utility. (Note: this is not a Microsoft
application. Use at your own risk.)

To run the CRC test, open a command prompt and run the utility. providing it
the name of the file (i.e. crc
c:\6.0.5383.1.1.WindowsSDK_Vista_idw.DVD.Rel.img) The CRC utility will run
two tests on the ISO: it will verify if the ISO is valid, and it will give
the AutoCRC signature for the file. The AutoCRC signature for the Windows
SDK Beta 2 ISO is 0x28434EEF. You should also confirm the size of the ISO is
correct: 1.14 GB (1,229,355,008 bytes).

If it fails any of these three tests, re-download the ISO.

I really like the direct link to it though if you right click CRC here>left
click Properties:
http://tacobell.iexbeta.com/longhorn/crc.exe

Does this mean MSFT will ship Taco Bell with Vista? Is there a Taco Bell
feature in Vista? How about Pizza? What about hotdogs?

Good luck,

CH
