Resending since it appears to have dissapeared...

I am leasing a dedicated Windows 2000 server. The leasing company provides
free DNS service for a single (1) domain and charge an expensive monthly fee
for additional domains.

I paid excessive DNS fees for a year and now I've registered with a DNS
provider that offers much better rates. I would like to use this provider
all of my domains as soon as possible but I'm afraid that something may go
wrong when I change my "Prefered & Alternate DNS server". Is it safe to do
this? I've already created the DNS records with the DNS provider. Is there
something else that is necessary?

Thank you.

Another question that I have, if I do change the Preferred and Alternate DNS
server settings, do I have to change anything else?

Thanks again

This was the response that I got from the company who I am leasing the
dedicated server from:

"There's no problem with having a 3rd party host the zone files for you.
However, I would advise against changing what the server is using for
lookups (the preferred and alt DNS settings) as this can cause alot of
problems."

Can this be true? I would really like to have the same DNS host for all of
my looksups since I have e-mail (sending) problems and get an error
indicating that my DNS settings don't match.

Yes, it can if this is a domain controller or if it is a member of an Active
Directory domain.
Since you state you have problems sending mail, if you are using Exchange
use of the proper DNS server is imperative.
