A lot depends on your prior experience with
other systems, how smart you are, your confidence
level, motivation, stubborness (this is a biggy if
you really want to be an expert), etc.

My favorite quick books is the
"Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Delta Guide" for
HIGH density, low volume, but it presupposes a lot of
knowledge even though it is not an overly difficult or
complex book.

PLEASE use the built-in HELP <<REALLY>> as it is
most of the time better than anything else you can buy
in clarity and accuracy although it does suffer a bit from
lack of focus (you must have SOME idea of what you
want to learn.)

One (guru) trick is to search for [ CHECKLIST ]
in the help. There is a checklist for practically every
significant component of the OS -- and using "checklist"
with another word like "DNS" can get you right to the
heart of the matter quickly. Searching "Checklists"
even gets you a "checklist of checklists".

Combine the online help with the Microsoft web site,
start with the Server and XP home pages, and you get
more than you can read in a decade.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP

Also search there for "step-by-step guides"; using
Google it looks like this:

[ step-by-step guides site:microsoft.com ]

The first hit there is a winner, and so are many of the other
things returned....

Oh, and have fun out there. <grin>

How about Amazon.com and start browsing?

Mark Minasi's book Mastering Windows 2003 Server is pretty good for both
Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. His book also has a lot of real world advice
and trick/traps. Many "study" type books are mostly rehashes of Windows help
files which as Herb says are great but no sense buying a book for that. I
also like the Lab Mice website. Microsoft and Technet are also good
resources, particularly for searching for a particular topic. The Windows
2003 Server Deployment kit is another great source of information and you
can download it free. It may be a bit technical and dry for a new learner.
Make sure you get your hands on an evaluation edition of Windows 2000 or
2003 and install it on a computer,or better yet two, of yours. They come
with many of the Microsoft Press MCSE study guides or can be downloaded from
MS.--- Steve
