Hi, i am a student interested in learning the basics of windows 2000/windows
2003 server. But i dont know where to start? can anyone recommend any books,
references etc? that will teach me (in theory) about the server from the
basics to more advanced teachings.
A lot depends on your prior experience with
other systems, how smart you are, your confidence
level, motivation, stubborness (this is a biggy if
you really want to be an expert), etc.
My favorite quick books is the
"Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Delta Guide" for
HIGH density, low volume, but it presupposes a lot of
knowledge even though it is not an overly difficult or
complex book.
PLEASE use the built-in HELP <<REALLY>> as it is
most of the time better than anything else you can buy
in clarity and accuracy although it does suffer a bit from
lack of focus (you must have SOME idea of what you
want to learn.)
One (guru) trick is to search for [ CHECKLIST ]
in the help. There is a checklist for practically every
significant component of the OS -- and using "checklist"
with another word like "DNS" can get you right to the
heart of the matter quickly. Searching "Checklists"
even gets you a "checklist of checklists".
Combine the online help with the Microsoft web site,
start with the Server and XP home pages, and you get
more than you can read in a decade.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP
Also search there for "step-by-step guides"; using
Google it looks like this:
[ step-by-step guides site:microsoft.com ]
The first hit there is a winner, and so are many of the other
things returned....
Oh, and have fun out there. <grin>
