Learn MM2 or Studio 8?

Aloke Prasad

I'm at a crossroad. I am trying to take the plunge and get into editing my
DV tapes (Sony TRV38) with either MM2 or Pinnacle Studio 8 (came with my ATI
9800 All-in-Wonder Pro).

Has anyone here used both these and could provide me with advice on which
road to pick?

If using MM2, I'll end up buying the 2 books that PapaJohn has written. The
Studio8 comes with a thick manual, so that will do for now.

TIA

Hi Aloke,

I haven't used Studio 8, but I'd think that 80% of what
you learn about one app would go toward learning all of
the video editing apps.

You must be using Windows XP if you're asking, so that
means you already have both apps. Jump a bit into both
and see how they feel for you.

PS - yes of course to the books for MM2 :)

Hi,

What will happen to the books when MM3 comes out? Any plans on how to
handle that?

How long till the books become obsolete?

:-)

Hi Aloke

I started with MM2 because of its ease of use. It has a very intuitive
interface which is excellent for getting started with basic video editing.
After a couple of weeks usage, and about 5 small projects under my belt, I
felt confident in the basics and moved on to Adobe Premiere.

Another good reason to start with MM2 is this group. There are loads of
people here, and two in partticular, who are happy to provide help and
advice to new users. I doubt you'll get such a warm reception in other
packages' newsgroups.

Thanks Jake,

After a long weekend visiting family, I'll start back into things with your
post... just to say thanks for the positive note.

And I concur with your comments about Movie Maker, and I also use Premiere.
You can't have too many software tools in your toolbox.

Aloke,

Guess I'm not thinking about what would happen to the books when MM3 comes
out. I have to first finish getting the books out there.

My website would become MM2/MM3 related. I'd write new versions of the
books, and the older books would fade away as time goes by.

What we don't know is the schedule milestone for that all happening. If it's
with Longhorn, ask me again in late 2005. Patches and minor upgrades
wouldn't effect the books between now and then.
