I need something that does antivirus really well. I'm not looking for
firewalls (got a hardware firewall), I'm not looking for internet
security. I'm just looking for AV. I want an AV scanner that is as
light on the machine as possible. I also want the AV scanner to have
email scanning (active email scanning at the ports level like norton).

Incoming email scanning is USELESS!

If an email has a virus or worm attachment then the anti virus application
will alert you of the fact when you try to open ir.

AVG Free or Avast are good anti virus applications.

take a look at NOD32, leaves the smallest footprint...

Might be useful against exploit based worms or trojans depending on how it
is implemented.

....mostly useless though. :)) And worse when the AV itself provides that exploit
vector. There are better ways to guard against exploit code like with some of the
firewall-like applications' (IDS)

I have been very happy with NOD32.

Good luck, jimbo

NOD32 is my favorite. It's easy on resources, fast and has frequent,
painless updates. I've been using it for 2 years now and no problems.

I use F-Prot as a backup on demand scanner and also as my main AV on
several non critical PCs that I rarely connect to the internet. You can
install F-Prot on up to 5 PCs with the basic license.

Some folks like AVG and/or avast!. I loaded AVG and avast! on a test PC
but I don't like their user interfaces and other annoyances.

I used AVG for years and never had a problem. I heard a lot of talk about
kaspersky and so I'm trying it now. In the initial scan it picked up a lot
of stuff that AVG didn't. (I don't think any of the stuff was harmful but it
found it none the less.) I wonder if I should also take a look at NOD32?

I installed AVG and avast! on a test PC. There were features of both
that I didn't care for. Although they are both highly rated, I don't
like the GUI of either one of them.

I do a lot of research on the internet looking for info on materials
technology for my work. I frequently get sent to malware sites by bad
links on sites that I've visited. I use Win98SE on my main PC and have
kept it updated. I run IE 5.01 SP2 and the latest Firefox.

I prefer Win98SE because it's in MY OPINION easier to fix when I do have
problems. In worst case scenario I can restore from a frequent cloned
backup with either Ghost or Acronis True Image. I connect to the net via
cable and run through a hardware router firewall.

I've been considering going to Linux but I need to use IE for a lot of
the sites I visit to access technical info I'm looking for. I also need
to have Java enabled. I realize that this is risky but when I have
someone on the phone waiting for a technical answer, I have to take
chances.

NOD32 has been very effective in blocking a lot of attempts to DL
malware on to my system, something I never had with other AV programs
that I've used or tried in the last few years (Norton, F-Prot, older
versions of Kaspersky and so on).

I really like the way NOD32 works.

What about your choice of Linux plus VMware or some other
virtualization software? Just a suggestion.
