How do you format a cell so that when enter a number and
enter the rest of the cell will have leading zeros?

right click on cell>format>custom
0000# will make sure you have 5 numbers. Add/sub 0's to suit.

.
I have successfully used an apostrophe ahead of the
leading zeros ie '000010. It will show the zeros but not
the apostrophe.

But then you must enter the apostophe and each leading 0.
Easier to enter 1 and get 00001 if you wanted 5 digits.

my concern wasn't the same as the original author. I was entering
product ID#s and they vary in length, and some start with a zero. So,
for my instance, an ' is the best for me. I only have to type in the
' if I have a leading zero.
