Thinking about one in the next few months. Ive seen 17" ers coming
down in price farily low again. However Ive also seen some consumer
reviews where some say they really wished they got a 19".

Any big beefs about the 17" by owners here? Of course everyone wants a
bigger screen but are there any particular beefs about getting the 17
vs a 19? The 19 are still kind of pricey and slow in their response
times I saw from a casual search tonight.

19" lcd monitors are so much more comfortable to use than 17" ones.
I suggest that you get a high quality lcd monitor. High quality 19" lcd
monitors are still over $500, however they will probably drop in price
by around 20% or so over the next 3-4 months. The beter quality lcd
monitors have greater brightness, contrast, and response time, as
well as having both standard monitor and DVI inputs. Response time
for the higher quality monitors is only an issue if you are a gamer. The
best thing to do when shopping for an lcd monitor is to see them in person,
and choose the one you like best.

Yeah thats the problem there isnt a whole lot of variety around here.
Mainly whats at Office Depot, Office Max Sam Club or Compusa.

A lot of the brands at Newegg etc that are often cheap and reviewed
well - the "hot deals" arent sold here.

Ive noticed though most of the brands are much better nowadays in
terms of contrast and brightness. My neighbor paid 700 for Samsung for
his kid a while ago and I always though it looked weird though it was
considered one of the better monitors then. Too washed out looking and
the colors looked strange.

Since then Ive noticed all the LCDs at compusa now look pretty decent
- rich colors, good contrast etc. I cant judge the accuracy of the
colors though unless they are way off of course and I cant judge the
reponse times unless I could test it with games. The same neighbor
bought a newer Samsung for $390 a few months ago and it looks way
better than the one he bought his son.

Of course Id like one that better in all respects but Im not as
worried about brightness and contrast unless the specs were way off.
Im more worried about bad pixels, response times and accuracy of the
colors --- nothing way off or weird. The early samsung besides looking
washed out had a strange kind of fluorescent , metallic quality to
some of the colors.

My main beef with 19" LCD's is that usually they come in at the same native
resolution as a 17" (1280x1024) So what you get is a bigger screen but the
same screen estate. My eyesight is pretty good so I don't need text or
icons any bigger than they already are on my 17" (NEC AccuSync LCD72VM,
very good by the way) what I would like is a bit more screen estate
(1600x1200 at 19" at a reasonable price would be good)

The 17" and the 19" TFT's both use Native Resolutions of 1280x 1024. So you
can see that the 17" screen will be rather hard to read text easily.

Now why is that?? I have 2 screens in front of me now:
My CRT screen has 17.5" visible screen and is comfortable to read at
1600x1200.
My laptop has a 15" TFT screen and it can do 1400x1050.
My old 17" CRT (15.5" visible) can do 1280x1024 and is perfectly readable
(only 60Hz!)

Why can't they apply laptop screen technology to stand-alone TFT screen
technology and make 15" TFT screens at 1280x1024, 17" TFT screens that do
1600x1200 and 19" screen that go even higher maybe 1800x1440? They would be
perfectly readable and much more useful than a 19" screen that is very
limited at 1280x1024?!!
