I have a Sony Vaio laptop, approximately 3-4 years old. The screen has begun
to flicker, looks like the backlighting is turning on and off. What's going
on and how can I resolve this issue? Thanks for the input.

Likely the backlight and /or inverter failing. (could be the ribbon cable)

Hook up an external monitor. If the problem does not reproduce itself there
above is the most probable.

My bet is the voltage inverter is failing. The voltage is erratic and
when it goes low, the fluorescent lamp goes dark.
