Hey guys,

I had bought a 17" LCD last year for my new homebuilt PC. I have a
Nvidia 6600 GT video card.
Initially, the monitor had some problems occaisionaly, where the screen
would go blank. Not quite dark, but I could make out blurred shapes in
the background.
The OS booted up fine, and I could see the screen flashing as the
various boot stages progressed.

It happened occaisionaly over the year, and finally about a month back,
the monitor went into that mode, and stayed that way.

I thought the montor was gone, so I bought a new Samsung 204b.
Yesterday however, I had the same problem. The display started up as
black and white pixels even though the OS booted up fine.
I left it for a while, and eventually restarted the PC. It then
started up fine.

Anyone have any clues on what the problem is? Im hoping this montor
doesnt go the same route as my old one.

Is it my video card killing these monitors?

Thanks,
Sumedh

That might be possible, but I doubt if it's the problem. I haven't
seen exactly the problem you describe, but similar. It sounds like
the kind of thing you might be able to fix by tweaking your bios video
settings or your video card settings.

First, test the old and new monitors on different systems, to see if
it they really have any problems, and go from there. Inspect your
cable carefully as well.

Someone who knows more than I do should correct me if I'm off-base...
but I think what can happen is that ROM is copied over to your system
RAM, to improve performance, and sometimes it doesn't work right.

To me, it sounds like a bad video card, or a video card that just needs to
be reseated. -Dave

Are they still connected?

I don't know how possible that is, but if I had that idea, I would
disconnect them and try a different video card. That's the way to
tell. Good luck.

You sure the refresh rate is set right?

The refresh rate is set to 60 Hz, and there are no other options. I
tried other monitors on my system, but didnt try my monitors on other
systems. I can try that.

This happened so in-frequently with my old monitor, and it also lasted
a year, so I dont know if I got two lemons in a row, or my video card
is really the culprit.

Thanks for the suggestions though. Ill try re-seating my video card,
and also try my monitors on other systems.

When you go into Display Settings is the monitor listed by it's proper
model name or are you using a generic monitor class?

It has the model name. I had installed the monitor drivers which came
on the CD.
I also have tried re-seating the card.

It so far has not re-occured, but I still have not found the root
cause, so Im a bit nervous.
