LCD monitor resolution vs aspect ratio

I have noticed that 19 inch lcd monitors have a native resolution 1280 x
1024, and have display aspect ratios of 4:3. It would seem the aspect ratio
should be 5:4 or does it not matter.

Aspect ratio isn't usually a big deal, but yes 1280x1024 is different
for whatever reason -- It's nothing specific to LCDs though.

Images will be slightly distorted with a 4:3 screen running at 1280 x 1024. Standard PC monitor aspect ratio is 4:3. Any resolution I have seen, from 640 x 480 to 1600 x 1200 is also 4:3, except for 1280 x 1024. If have never seen an explanation of why 1280 x 1024 is used instead of 1280 x 960.

Amen, brother. I've been plagued with ovals for circles and have just
had to grin and bear it.
