MSAS Help provides this ready-to-use information:

"Explorer: Winsock Layered Service Providers
A Winsock Layered Service Provider (LSP) is a program that resides in the
computer's Winsock layer and is used for all network communications both
internally and externally on the Internet. An LSP program can intercept and
modify all data that goes in and out of your computer's network.

What does this Explorer Display?
This Explorer will show you all LSPs that are installed on your computer.
Microsoft Windows installs a number of LSP programs by default, these
Windows LSP programs are noted with a star icon to the left of the LSP
program."

However the LSP chain is also a place, where spyware can stick their own
pieces of code to monitor or (as said above) capture and modify the network
transmission.

If you brake this chain (by removing some LSP's) you may have some network
problems - so in case of such situation take a look here
