Been using XP Home edition since July - nary a problem till this past
week. More often than not, when launching on any link in Outlook
Express mail, IE will hang up while it is starting to launch. I am
unable to stop the process as task manager cannot be called up. I am
then forced to do a hard reset.

I can launch IE independently w/o it hanging up 99% of the time.

To the best of my knowledge, no new software loaded in the past month
(aside from windows updates). NAV with current signatures gives me a
clean scan.

I began the process of repairing IE or Outlook per MS KB318378
but stopped before reloading/repairing OS. The problem still exists
after the initial repair process.

Is is possible that one of the last MS updates is the culprit?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated -

Hi,

Try this:

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express if either are open.

Start/run "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes)

Control panel/Internet options/programs tab, click on "reset all web
settings"

Reopen and retry the links in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Worked like a charm. Thank you Rick Rogers. My family's complaining
has already stopped. --------------------------Sapho

You're most welcome. Now if only my family would stop complaining about how
much time I spend answering questions <g>.

UPDATE***
I took advice from "Nutcase" and problem seemed to go away, only to
return within 24 hours. Next I used Ad Aware 6.0 (free at
www.download.com) to check for spybots, adware - results were that I
was a host to a large colony of these 'bots. Their removal not only
restored my ability to launch IE from Outlook Express embedded links,
but have significantly increased response time from IE when launching
directly. Problem has not returned (>48hrs).
