Launching Common Files after Migration - Policy Issue??

~Martin~

The Company I work for finally installed a Exchange 5.5
box on the network to replace Group Wise 5.5 that used to
reside on the Novell 4.11 box.

The Migration went well and all users are enjoying the use
of Exchange over Group Wise....Who wouldn't!!

Here is where the problem is:

Prior to the migration, users would log on to the
Novell Network and the Local Machine every time they
wanted to use the work station.

Now they log on to the Novell Network for File and
Print Services and the NT Domain for authentication for
the Exchange Box.

Since the migration, users have called indicating they
can not open common file types. For example, they try and
open a JPEG file and an error box informs them that there
isn't a program on the system they can use to open that
file type. If they open MS Paint or Imagining, they are
able to open the file.

I tried logging on as Admin, and everything works fine
for me thus concluding that the problem doesn't affect
persons with Admin privileges.

I took a look at C:\WINNT\system32\GroupPolicy folder
for rights and for kicks, as I thought the restrictions
may have come from a Policy. I denied all users access to
List/Read/Execute for all users and had a normal user
log on and the same problem occurred.

I was almost guaranteed that the problem originated
there.

Can anyone help??

Hello Martin,
What operating system are your users using? Sounds like Windows 2000 or
XP. It also sounds like the the files are not associated with thier common
apps but some app that requires the user to have administrative privileges.
Group Policy may not be playing a part here.

The O/S is Win2k

Prior to the migration, there was only one
workstation "User" account per workstation that all users
would log on to. At that time, there was no problem with
file associations. As soon as the NT Domain was created,
then each user has their individual user folder
under "C:\Documents and Settings" and that is when the
problem occured. Of course the admin account is fine. When
you lauch a JPEG file, it should bring up the default
viewer, and windows normally sets "Imaging" as that
viewer, but it doesn't work. I did look at the "File
Types" and there was a valid entry for that file type. I
even tried deleting it and re-creating it with no success.

Thanks

Martin
