Launch TWAIN with using application?

Can I launch my TWAIN driver without having to use an application like
Photoshop or Pixia to do an "Acquire"?

I would like to launch TWAIN and then get TWAIN to scan and save its results
(persumably this would be as a bitmap).

TWAIN (http://www.twain.org/) is a 'driver' specification for image
acquisition devices. The driver (communication protocol) needs to be
controlled by an application, and the output must be directed to an
application. By itself there isn't much going to happen.
