Chris

I have gotten the same issue on 3 separate computers in the past week.

When I double click a *.xls file Excel appears to launch, the Top and Bottom
toolbars appear, but the middle worksheet section does not. So if launch a
worksheet from Start/programs/documents I would still be able to see my
desktop with the exception of the top and bottom Excel toolbars.

The trend I have noticed is that it started occuring when I was working in
both MS Excel 2002 and MS Access 2002 at the same time. I use XP Pro. One
of the other computers was Windows Server 200x.

Because of this I know have to open Excel and then from Excel open the
individual file(s).

Other than reinstalling does anyone know of any known issues or conflicts?
Suggestions?

thanks.

It sounds like the workbook is opening off screen.

Try opening it using windows explorer and then
window|arrange|tiled
(and resize later)

If this doesn't work, maybe the workbook really didn't open. When you clicked
on Window in the menubar, did you see your workbook name at the bottom of that
dropdown list?

If yes, then the resizing should have worked.

If no, sometimes one of these works:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

Dave, thanks for your help.

None of your suggestions worked including the reg/unreg.

Yes, my file name is at the bottom of the Window menu. I see the status bar
increment as the file loads. Also, I can type a cell into the "name box"
and the contents of that cell appear in the formula bar. The name box/
formula bar is the bottom row of what I can see on the top toolbar(s).

I can minimize, maximize and close Excel with no problem. Full
functionality except for being able to see the worksheet and clicking in the
area where it should be has no results.

I'll keep checking back but I think my next step is reinstall mainly b/c
even though I'm a relative layman, I'm positive the issue is some conflict
that arose with MS Access when they were both open at the same time.

Thanks again.

I don't think reinstalling excel will help.

Since your file is at the bottom of that list (under Window), it's opening.

Try the Window|arrange|tiled once more

That should work.
