If it is in the lower right, blue and white, with appropriate Microsoft
Antispyware icons, stays on top and isn't resizable, I believe this is the
legitimate update notice,. and would urge you to install the update.

I got the same message but deleted it from my PC. It
looks totally official but a friend of mine downloaded it
a few days ago and got a virus on his PC... so i am
suspicious...

This message, as I've described it, should be legitimate. I'd be interested
to know more about your friends experience? What identified the virus?
What virus was it?

If in doubt, or in a hurry, the new build can be downloaded from:

I received the official notice just now, (my husband on
his machine has not received his), when clicking on the
update it didnt download, my spyware still tells me that
it expires on 31st July and that it is Microsoft
AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.509, how do I proceed in
getting the new update, as I have tried the auto updater
and I am told that my version is still upto date

That happened to me on one machine as well. I have also since then seen the
same prompt on the machine I am writing from, and told it to do the upgrade,
and it worked just fine.

If you are impatient, or the auto-upgrade does not happen for you for
whatever reason, simply go directly to the (newly redesigned!) download page
and download the same bits, save them to a handy location and run the
downloaded file to perform the upgrade:

(found two links below http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/software)

The only difference between the two processes is the way the installer file
is delivered--I don't know where it lives physically in the auto
method--presumably in temp files--but it would be the same file.
