Latest Kav update - HUGE

What's "huge"? What exactly did you observe?

Thanks for asking, Art. I've been using MWAV for sometime with your
update bat.

About 150 files were changed. All dated the 16th, and most were
reduced in size slightly.

Today I tried updating my backup copy of MWAV and it started DLing
the same large batch of files. I cancelled the update and updated
the set that had the big change made to it and I got a normal
update of 9 files. It appears the massive change was legit. Maybe
they were doing cleanup?

Also, when I updated the wife's copy of MWAV and it did not get the
150 file change, just a normal small DL. I'm confused to say the
least.

More info. I update daily.

Examples from the huge update:

BASE001.AVC 49,905 06/16/06
BASE002.AVC 49,020 06/16/06
BASE003.AVC 48,852 06/16/06

Same files from backup dated 06/15/06:

BASE001.AVC 49,971 06/01/06
BASE002.AVC 49,532 04/07/06
BASE003.AVC 49,275 05/23/06

Which 'sizes' for these BASE files agree with your latest update?

I don't know, of course. The reason I asked for more info is that
I suspected that someone (in this case you) was perhaps confusing
a long time to update with a large update. With the sort of "behind
the scenes" update operations in Windows scanners it can be
difficult for some users to tell the difference. I noticed that the
servers KAV 6 uses were almost unavailable at times yesterday,
and it gave the appearance of a "huge" update when actually,
not much was going on except for a search for working servers
and a occassional actual small update.

The latter group. I have them in two places. One for KAV 6 and the
other in my KAVDOSNT folder.

My updates for KAVDOSNT have been running around 8+ MBs.

Not very often, I hope. I haven't been keeping tabs on it lately
but it used to be that the large cumulative was issued about
every two months. The weekly came out on Fridays. The dailys
nowdays are updated many times per day, so it can be
expected that a small file will d/l practically every time you
update. That "small file" might be a few hundred K though.

It does seem to me that large cumulatives are issued far more
often than they used to be. I'll have to start tracking it out of
curiosity, now that you raise the issue.

Well, my wife's computer finally DL'd the huge update this morning
and all appears normal. Why the two computers with the same MWAV setup
saw the update three days apart, I can't explain. There were four
screens of changes when viewed in my backup program. I imagine the
latter group above has updated for you by now.

I have a feeling there was some kind of a glitch last Saturday. I'm
starting to keep track of my KAVDOSNT updater. Yesterday (Sunday)
it downloaded the whole shebang ... cumulative, weekly and daily.
This morning it was OK, just downloading a small daily.

I know that Saturday was a bad day (here at least) for obtaining
updates via KAV 6. It couldn't find servers that wouldn't time out.

To confuse matters, there are several kinds of update mechanisms
and arrangements available from different servers. My KAVDOSNT method
looks for new zips of cumulative, weekly and daily. Other schemes
don't use zips .. they download (mostly) individual .avc files as
required. I've forgotten which scheme is used on the old MWAV
updater I used to offer.

Took a helluva time to update using KAV-UP here at the weekend Art, but not
long to update KAVDOSNT. I even quit half way through using KAV-UP and tried
a couple of FTP file browsers, but they took just as long. I figured a lot
more users than I've seen before were trying to update at that time, but now
that seems unlikely, after all these years of trouble-free downloading.

Like I say by the time I got to updating KAVDOSNT it was as quick as it
usually is.

I assume KAVDOSNT requires an NT system which I do not have.
I prefer Win98SE.

MWAV downloads .avc files. Since I'm getting small DLs again, I
have to assume all is OK. As I mentioned, almost every file
change 'reduced' the file size slightly. Could they have been
doing a little file clean up?

No, the "NT" was intended to indicate that the utils are
compatible with NT based OS as well as Win 9X/ME. You simply
can't use the KAVDOSNT.BAT program in Win 9X/ME. Use the
more general purpose KAVDOS.EXE program instead. For
formal scanning, use the boot disk created by K-BOOT.

Your guess is as good as mine :) Things seem to have settled
down back to normal now. My KAVDOSNT updater is back to
just downloading dailys and KAV 6 is updating normally.

My DL this evening was only 600k.

Thanks for clearing that up. Bad assumption on my part.
