I have 2 Vista PCs and the drivers on my oem's website (dell) are more recent
than my current one. Both my Vista PCs have automatic update on and I have
manully checked both for updates needing my permission to install but the
drivers are not there. My question is with my XP PCs Windows update had all
the latest driver why is this not the same for Vista?

Hello,

I'm not very well informed about the Windows Update process, but I think the
drivers that are provided that way have to be integrated and verified in
Windows Update, so I think driver updates by Dell are not displayed in it
because they are not delivered by Windows Update itself.

Please correct me, this can easily be a silly remark. I'm sorry if I confuse
anybody.

Your PC manufacturer will most probably always have newer drivers than Windows
Update.

The manufacturer of a PC component will have even newer drivers than Dell.
Although, Dell may have gone through further compatibility tests of drivers on
their particular systems.

I recommend to never use Windows Update for drivers, always use the OEM.
Windows update does not list drivers on OEM's websites, it lists those
provided to Microsoft from the hardware mfg's, and they are usually not
current, and in my experience can cause major problems.

I second that. I have seen too many systems go south by installing
"updated" drivers from Windows Update. Usually they turn out to be older
than what you are presently using.
