Anyone else have any problem with the latest (Sept) update from antivira?
It threw my W98 OS into a flat spin - following download my pc failed to
re-boot going straight into Safe mode. Time and again it failed, reaching the Windows logo only
to re-start from scratch once again, then into Safe mode once more - No way could I get a normal start.
Eventually, using msconfig to check out start-up progs I disabled
the antivira references and presto - normal start. Needless to say I've uninstalled
antivira completely, hoping next updates will be safer to instal when I pluck up courage

Anyone else encounter any similar problem? From time to time I've had quirky behaviour following updates
though never as severe as this time. Occasionally I've had failed antivira loading at bootup -
usually with some reference to vxd files. All other programs function fine .. I have a Pentium 4
with 1Gb ram etc etc. I'm trying to figure if my system somehow conflicts with certain antivira
updates. Odd thing is that on most occasions they've worked fine.

Any clues please???

Apologies - the program is Avira Antivir (damn stupid name for
a good program - I always have trouble with it).

Web site is www.free-av.com

Used the program for years but there's definitely some conflict with my own
system ( which is fairly standard ) Sometimes I'm a bit
suspicious about my GeForce graphics card - and no doubt lots of driver
updates are overdue.

Anyway -- that's it

Thanks for suggestions/advice

If this update is the first that has messed your w98se then you are very
lucky indeed.Personally i wouldnt use it on any 98/se/me system as it is
clearly (check the forums and your own experiences of it)very buggy on
these systems. If its any help... i think youll find all the problems you
mention will miraculously disappear when you uninstall antivir.

My first attempt to update after install today was: a general protection
fault in kernal32dll-->forcing a shutdown ie6-->forcing a shutdown of Avira
AntiVir PE classic. The update was aborted after completion of the download.
20+minutes wasted. The shield says its up but icon disappeared from the
system tray. This process with reboot repeated its self a few times.
Shutdown.Coldboot. System processes for Avira seem to be running ok. Maybe
tomorrow I will try again to update. These were my first experiences with
this software on win98se with 2k and all critical updates.

I just tried another update. The server says that my local defnitions are up
to date, 9/10/2006 1:35 . No change in the update files or engine. File
dates: 6/22-23/06 which means not.

It is working now. Update successful. There are problems with kernal32dll
forcing shutdown of prog~ , the instablity is between anti-spyware and AV.
