I'm trying to revive an old LaserJet series II printer. When I run a
test print all I get is a black page with 6 white 1/8 in lines at the
top. Then after the test page prints I get a "51 Error" message. The
same happens when I try to print a Word document.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong? Maybe, it's time to get rid of
the thing! Thanks in advance for your help

A quick look at www.all-laser.com turned up these reasons for error 51:

Defective toner cartridge

Loose connections on cable from scanner to DC controller

Defective fiber optic cable

Defective scanner assembly - replace RG5 0050

I haven't worked on one of those old beasts in many years and before my last
move I disposed of my old HP manuals but maybe this site will help you a
bit: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/troubleshooting.html
