Laserjet IIIp problem

When I send something to the printer, it does everything it should
except pick up the paper.

First, the "ON LINE" light is lit, and it says 00 READY LETTER.
I send a doc. to the printer. The FORM FEED light lights. The blinking
black square in the window shows data is being received. You hear the
engine running just like a jet engine powering up.

Then, the ON LINE light goes off, and the FORM FEED light stays on,
and it says 13 PAPER JAM.

What would be the problem?

Any help appreciated - thanks

I should add, it doesn't even TRY to grab or pick up that paper.
Just gives the error message.

When you say it doesn't try to pick up paper, is it just that the paper does
not start to move or are you saying that the pick up roller is not turnng at
all?
The most likely cause is that the roller is worn and is not picking up the
paper, this can happen quite suddenly.
If it is the roller (open the front door, the roller is in the middle of the
shaft in the door) you can clean it with a damp cloth or Isoproply alcohol, if
that improves the situation then the roller is the culprit and needs to be
replaced although the cleaning can fix it for some time.

The //p and ///p also can have a problem with the pickup roller
clutch assembly. If the clutch goes out, it will not rotate the shaft
to pick up the paper. The clutch is located on the right side of the
printer as you look at the front.

Look at the roller mentioned above and see if you can see it turning
when it's supposed to be picking up paper.

No, I mean not only does the paper not move, but the printer does not
even try to pick it up at all. You don't hear a click or anything. (I
have another machine which had the problem that it would TRY to pick
up the paper but fail - you could hear it trying to grab it - but it
failed to do so and then you'd get PAPER JAM message. But with this
machine, that doesn't happen - it doesn't try to pick it up at all.
You just get the error message. Before that, you DO maybe hear the
pick up roller turning around, because I do hear something moving,
maybe that is what I hear. But it doesn't do the next step of trying
to grab the paper.

Ray,
Hmm, not sure what's on the right. Do you mean with front door closed?
With it closed, the only thing I see on the right is the button to
open the door. I also see the thing to push to make the paper exit to
the front.
Maybe I should mention - I just bought this printer used but it was
broken in and since it contained a message "bad fuser gears - bad
fuser" I bought a new (used) fuser assembly, which I assume works OK.

Well Sam
If the pick up roller is turning then the problem is that roller, if it isn't
then the problem may be the pick up roller clutch as Silicon Sam has advised.
The clutch is at the end of the shaft that the roller is on, you need to open
the front cover to see it.
I can't remember exactly where, but there is a switch that is operated when the
front door is closed, normally this is operated by a piece of plastic on the
door that pushes the switch when the door is closed. If you can locate that
switch and operate it with a small piece of non-metallic material with the door
open, you can then attempt to print a test page with the door open - you can
then see if the roller is turning or not. Don't worry if you get a paper jam,
the purpose is to see whether the roller is turning or not.
