I have a Laserjet 5si set up to an IP and it simply won't print from
any user's computer.

I have set the IP and printed the conf page to confirm it.

I am able to ping the bloody thing.

I have downloaded the latest XP drivers from HP's website.

They have JetXPrint network cards not Jet Direct Network cards.

I have gone through the HP troubleshooting option through Windows XP
that includes such things as

I can not print from any program on any user's machine.

I get the error "This document failed to print"

I can logon to the printer from Internet Explorer and I can print a
test page from that site but I cannot from Windows.

Please help! I am pulling my hair out from this one!

Checking to see if it is plugged in and turned on. Checking my network
connectivity to it. Checking to see if the print server (which it is
not on one) is allowing to print at this time. Checking a multitude of
things. It eventually said that "this troubleshooter cannot solve the
problem you are having"

Hi!
I am able to ping the bloody thing.

That's a start. Does this print server device have some kind of an
administrative interface that you could use to view and change settings?

What about an option to reset it to factory defaults? Is there any updated
firmware available?

Any network print server that I've worked with has offered at least a Telnet
based configuration utility. Most made within the last six years will have a
web interface that can be accessed from any web browser...and it sounds like
your print server device does indeed have one!

When you find the administrative interface, look around and make sure the
proper protocols are enabled. IP printing should be enabled, and turning on
LPD/LPR/Port 9100 printing might not be a bad idea either. For a test you
could also try enabling FTP printing, if it is supported. Then you could at
least use FTP to transfer a file (plain text preferred) to see if any
printing over the network functions correctly.

On the computer, check to be sure that you are in fact using the TCP/IP
printer port. Check the TCP/IP printer port properties and try using
LPD/LPR/9100 printing if it's not selected already. (If prompted for a queue
name, try LP or LPD...) Try disabling the SNMP status setting...it may not
be supported or enabled at the printer.

Are your clients running firewalls that block printing?

later....

They are not running firewalls other than windows. I shouldn't be able
to ping the printer from their machines if the firewall is blocking it
though. I will check the printer firmware. That might have something
to do with it. Thanks for the insight. I will check back with this if
it doesn't.
