Laserjet 5 print errors

Recently my HP Laserjet 5 (not the color lj) started printing narrow
horizontal and vertical rules as wide ones. Graphics and text print OK. For
example, on a web page with underlined text, the underline prints as a wide
line that almost obscures the text. Another example is in printing a calendar
in two different apps. The narrow rules around each date are printed as wide
lines.

Updated the printer's drivers lately, intentionally or
unintentionally?

The only mechanism for changing the drivers, as far as I can tell, is
installing a new driver from the printer's properties. After the problem
started, I did install the "new driver" offered by Windows. I saw no change
in the problem after that, so if it is a driver problem, that's the only
driver Windows is offering me. HP doesn't offer drivers for XP.

However, note that there are different versions of the HP
LaserJet 5, viz., 5, 5L, 5MP, 5N, etc. Installing drivers
from Microsoft instead of downloading them from HP can, and
does, lead to errors. So...was the LaserJet 5 driver that
got installed the correct one for this particular printer?
In other words, there are times to leave things alone, esp.
since the HP LaserJet 5 is actually old enough that there
are no truly "new" drivers for it.

HP doesn't offer drivers for XP.
If you have a lj5 that has postscript, this is irrelevant. FWIW, the ps
cards for some lj5s are cheap on eBay, and you get a nicer output if you're
doing graphics.

In this case, the drivers are on the Windows XP cdrom.
