I have a LJ5 that has been faded vertical areas towards the right side
of page. Changing toner and doing basic maintainence did not fix the
problem. The only other thing I have read is to clean the mirror. I
can't seem to locate this. Does anyone have any experience with this
problem and how to resolve it. Also would someone have a pdf of the
service manual. While HP should have it on their web site, they seem
to be charging for it. I would rather not spend the money if I need
to spend more that a couple of hundreds for a manual and maybe
maintainace kit since I could buy a cheap laser these days.

Any help would be appreciated

The mirror is located on the scanner assembly. If you take off the top
cover of the printer, you will find a black, sort of trapezoidal
shaped box. That's the scanner. It is held down by 4 screws and has 3
sets of wires going to it and one set going across the top of it.
Gently remove the wires from their respective sockets and remove the 4
screws holding it down. Remove the scanner. On the top of it, you
will find 1 black screw helping to hold down it's top cover. Remove
the screw. There is also a metal shutter bar that needs to be removed
as well. On one side of the scanner, there is a small spring that is
attached to the scanner body and the shutter bar. Gently remove it and
set it aside. Do not lose the spring. Next you should find 4 plastic
clips that are a part of the top cover of the scanner. Pry these clips
apart with a pair of needle nosed pliers, While prying the clips
apart, pull up on the top cover untill all clips are clear of the
body of the scanner. Rotate the cover forward and off the body. Inside
you will see the scanner mirrors and a long mirror. Blow out the
insides of the assembly with canned air. Gently wipe all surfaces of
the mirrors with a soft dry cloth. DO NOT USE ANY LIQUIDS OR
CHEMICALS! That will destroy the coating on the mirrors. Make sure you
get into the corners of the long mirror. Reassemble and test. Best of
luck.
