got a laserjet 4050N from a friend. it has an 'unknwon history', but
appears clean, complete, and undamaged. it doesn't yet have a toner/drum
unit. when I first plug it in, with no paper in the tray, and no
toner/drum unit, and 'throw the switch', NOTHING happens - no led's lite
up, no fan spin-up or laser-spin motor noises heard, no *NOTHING*.

question: shouldn't the thing at least spin up the fan, or give me some
dialog in the display, or blink the LED's once or twice, or lite up the
tiny display? I've tried two -different- power cords in a 'known
functional' wall outlet, and tried pressing ALL the top buttons, all to
no avail...tried switching it on and off numerous times - same deal;
'nothing', acts like a brick...

is there a 'reset' switch or fuse in these printers anywhere? what else
COULD it be?

I'm assuming the that once the thing -does- 'work', it'll give me some
dialog, like 'no toner present' or 'add paper now' or something, but
before I spend cash for supplies, I wann make sure it's worthwhile...

thanks for tips and clues

ps - if you reply by e-mail, pls remove the 'weirdstuff' from my address
before you click 'send' thanks :-)

I've just removed the toner cart. from mine, and switched on. There's
mechanical (spin) noise from the print engine as it re-sets itself, blinking
of the LEDs and the LCD lights up. After a few seconds the LCD reads
"Install Toner Cartridge". It sounds as though yours has a faulty power
unit.

http://fileshare.eshop.bg/
lists the service manual in 3 parts.
My HP (not a 4050) has a thermal circuit breaker
in the AC PSU. Fuser triacs can die in HP lasers,
mine did, pain in the butt to find a relpacement, along
with its driver opto-coupler which it had taken out when
it failed.
