Laser Smearing?

I bought a new Brother 6050D that runs fast and nice. Oops, I just found out
that envelopes I print on it have easily smeared print. Why? The printer is
new, the toner is new Brother.

I have an old Brother 1440 that sort of still runs. It can print on the same
envelopes and the ink sticks on just fine. This printer even has some
no-name toner in it.

Bummer.

It's about fuser heat. After the loose toner is laid down, the fuser
heats it up to melt and stick to the paper. An envelope is at least two
layers of paper, so it requires more heat than plain paper.

Your old printer may just run hotter, or the newer printer may attempt
to save power or extend life by running a cooler fuser.

Some newer printers have settings to describe what type of paper is
being printed. The HPs have a setting to slow down paper speed, giving
the fuser more time to apply heat.

Thanks Warren, thats about what I had expected to hear.

Fortunately I found a setting that says "envelopes", imagine that. Using
that setting makes 95% of the problem go away. I can live with the last 5%.

I will say that everything else about this printer has been impressive,
except maybe for loading the drivers. That wasn't spelled out so clearly.

This is my first printer with a duplexer and I like it. I can print a
booklet faster if I manually duplex it but the auto feature takes much
effort out of the process. Start printing, go for coffee, return and it is
done.

I still love my old Brother 1440 even though it is wearing out. I recently
took the drum completely apart and cleaned it, (and got it back together).
That made it seem like it was much newer again however I realize that won't
last too long.

Thanks again,
