I'm thinking of buying a laser printer to make PCB's and I noticed that

head would produce the image?

I'm not sure what you are asking.
Most B/W lasers are Electrophotographic.
There are two basic types of laser engines at the business and consumer level.
Laser beam and LED, both produce good images.
Are you going to print PCB layouts onto transparencies? If so, almost any good
quality laser will do that provided you only use transparency media designed
for a laser printer (non laser transparencies will damage a laser printer).
You need to choose a laser that produces very solid blacks and the entry level
ones may not be good enough. There are some who have posted here in the past
that have experience in this area, also you may want to look for a newsgroup
that addresses PCB production or one of the electronic newsgroups.
