I have a client with a very large slide show. It contains
pictures and sound and is 30MB. The slide show locks up
about 3/4 of the way through everytime. It is a different
slide everytime. This occurs whether it is run from the
network, hard drive or a CD. What steps would you take to
fix it? He can't reduce the file size much because it has
to be fixed in 2 hours and he doesn't have time to alter
every picture.

Thanks,
Carla

Hi Carla,

IMHO his only chance is to reduce file size or use another computer. Lets
start with file size:

Which version of PowerPoint does your client use? PowerPoint 2002 and 2003
allow compressing of pictures within PowerPoint (right click on one of the
pictures, choose "Format image").

How did he insert the pictures? Copy&Paste produces large files. Cut and
re-insert with "Paste Special" in JPG file format.

Is "allow fast saves" (Tools - Options) turned off? This causes a file to
grow each time it is saved.

If none of these options helps, split the presentation in two parts and link
them.

All of these options can be completed in some minutes.

Kind regards,
Ute

He is using 2002. I'll recommend this right away.

Awesome! I had no idea you could do this. I'll recommend
this too.

Most likely. I'm waiting for him to call back, but I
checked with our desktop folks and they have it turned on
by default when the application is installed. So most
likely it is. I will have him turn it off.

Thanks. That is the only thing that I knew to recommend
at the time. I am a powerpoint novice as you can tell.
You have been a huge help Ute. Thanks a million!!

Carla,

one addition: If he turns off "Fast saves" and/or uses the other options,
have him save the file using a (slightly) different name to make fully use
of the effects!

Kind regards,
Ute
