Large .OST and .PST files

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to or provide
for me information about the effects of overlarge .pst
or .ost on Outlook's performance? Could a .pst after a
certain size cause Outlook to run slowly or stop
responding or act strangely?
 
I did read recently (cant remember where, sorry) that .pst size does affect performance..and that archiving should be put into place to mimise this issue. As for specifics, i am very sorry , but dont know..

For Outlook 2002 and previous versions the maximum size is 2GB. For Outlook
2003 the default is 20GB but can be 4096TB (in case you run out of room...)

I never had a pst-file that large but overal performance is generally
starting to get poor somewhere between 1.2GB and 1.5GB. There is more to it
though like, fragmentation of the file, the speed of your harddisk, amount
of memory, and (less) the CPU speed. Also the amount of items in the folder
you are trying to view has an effect on the speed of the file
