Hi All,

I have been asked to add a large hard drive (200GB) to a PC that uses
win2000 (it has 80GB). I have never used this O.S before is there anything
that I will need to do e.g. in the registry or bios. Any suggestions would
be helpful.

Shouldn't have to do anything.

If your adding the drive, not replacing the 80GB, just make sure your
jumpers are set correctly. Once in Windows, you'll have to format the drive
before you can 'see' it.

Two conditions must be satisfied in order for Windows 2000 to properly
access large (> 137GB) disks:
1. Install Service Pack 3 or 4.
2. EnableBigLba = 1 in the registry.
--- cut ---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters]
"EnableBigLba"=dword:00000001
--- cut ---

3. Run Disk Management (right click My Computer > Manage > Disk
Management) and check the capacity of the disk (Disk 1 for the second
disk). Disk size for a 200G drive is either 186.## or 189.## depending
on the manufacturer.

FWIW if you have such a drive installed and later try to dual boot then the
second install "May" set off the disk checker - hit a key in 15 seconds or
it runs - and if you miss that then it will corrupt anything on the section
of disk above 137. Once it starts it's unstoppable.

BTDT.

IOW if you have say an 80 G drive split in two 40G partitions and install an
OS and then install the large drive I would suggest removing the large drive
again before installing the second OSon the other partition. I would also
suggest remove it before doing a reinstall for the same reason, the install
disk checking may think it is corrupt and try to correct it :)

Of course this only applies if you have a BIOS / Motherboard that doesn't
inherently support large drives.
