Sir,

I use a dial-up modem to connect to the internet. Lately I
have
been noticing that large quantities of data is being
uploaded from
my computer. This is being done without any request or
action on my part.

This problem presists even when I use different ISPs. I
have even tried
using a different modem, without improvement. I use
Windows 2000 Professional
along with IE 6.00.2800.1106 and Outlook Express
6.00.2800.1123 for my internet needs.
Sometimes I get the following error message

"SVCHOST.exe has generated errors & will be closed by
Windows
You will need to restart the program"

following which Windows hangs.

Apart from being a security hazard this is seriously
eating into my bandwith.
Please advice me regarding the problem and the possible
solution. Thanking you.

Sounds like you have the Blaster or similar variant ... Update your
anti-virus files and install a software firewall ... See your AV vendor's
web site for removal instructions of any virus/worm found on your PC after
you update and thoroughly rescan your PC ...

I agree this sounds like blaster virus. I had it and also
got the SVCHOST.exe error. In addition to killing the
virus and upgrading your Norton Virus definitions you may
also need to install a firewall (if running windows 2000)
because even though blaster won't be able to infect your
computer once you're protected it can continue to try to
attack and slow down your computer.

I'm having the same problem with sent data choking the
bandwidth and I don't find any listed blaster files running
in task manager or process manager.

Anybody got any other ideas?

Identify what program/service is generating theese transfers.
First off install a personal firewall, that will help you identify the
program/service responsible for the transfers. You can get the free
version of ZoneAlarm from http://www.zonelabs.com
If this is not enough there are many other tools available that will
help you find out exactly what is going on.

And of course perform virus/spyware/trojan-scan on your computer.
