I have a client that have mobile useres that connect to
the domain. When they log in to the domain, a user
folder is set up which is different than the one the user
uses at home. This causes there to be two sets of "my
documents, etc. When logged on to the domain the users
folders name is "fred.doman" and when logged on to the
local machine the users folder name is "fred". Is there
some way that the system can use the same user folder for
domain and non domain use?

Hope this makes sense.

can you create a network share/drive for each user
(mapped to their account),enable "offline files" , get
them to save all work to this folder, then synchronise
the two when back on line

I had thought of that, but I am trying to make this as
simple as possible. I can't believe there isn't a way to
share the same user account for domain and non-domain
connections. There must be plenty of people that bring
their PC's in from home and use them on their corp nets.

There is. Have them log onto the domain account even when they are at home
and disconnected from the domain controller. Cached credentials will be
used to authenticate the user, and they will still use their domain folders.
