Laptops and Internet connection abroad.....need info

Hi all

I will be moving to India to work and I need to take my laptop with me.

I'm trying to figure out how/if I will be able to get connected to the internet while I'm there.

Somebody said that I need a cell-phone with GPRS activated......I don't even know what this means!

Is this just a mobile phone with roaming enabled? How does that affect my laptop?

All these strange devices that you need for simple internet connection is leaving me a bit puzzled.
 
You "sign-up" with an ISP just like you do in any other country. ;)

What state in India you off to.

I'm going to a city called Pune which is about 130km east of Bombay.

I might try and get access to the University Internet (if they have it)......

So I don't need any complicated devices? And I don't need to get a mobile phone with roaming?

What do people mean when they can get access to the internet through GRPS on their phone?
