Hi there,

I have a laptop here and the colors don't seem to be up to par after a fresh
install. The colors were great before, and now they are darkish with tinges
around the fonts. The correct video driver is installed, but the monitor is
"default" monitor and I can't find anything under XP for "laptop displays".

There is no monitor driver from this laptop manufacturer, ECS.

How can I change the monitor to display in laptop lcd mode? There was such a
selection in Win 9X, but I am missing something here.....

Thanks,

Gordon

What is the model number of your laptop?

Open Control Panel - Display - Properties and go to the Settings tab.
What does it say there for the video adapter?

When you reinstalled did you use a Windows XP disk provided by the
laptop manufacturer or did you use a retail version?

Good luck

Go to
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downlo...Driver&DetailDesc=A928(4.0)&MenuID=37&LanID=9
and download the Windows XP drivers for your machine and install them.

Notebooks/Laptops (all makes) contain a lot of proprietary hardware
and the generic drivers contained in the retail CDs very often do not
work properly with these machines. You need the specific drivers from
the manufacturer's website.

Good luck

The colors were great before, and now they are darkish with tinges
around the fonts.

ClearType fonts were designed for better reading on some screen types,
laptops included. It blends the font edges by adding colored pixels. When
enabled, you might notice a faint tinge of color. Perhaps this was off
before and became enabled?

To check, right click the desktop and select Properties> Appearance. Click
the Effect button and check the font smoothing method selected. Experiment
with clear type on and off.

In addition, there is a cleartype tuner available. This helps to control
the amount of font smoothing that will be used. If you find your problem is
related to clear type and turning it off isn't any more desirable than
leaving it on, you could use the cleartype tuner to "lighten" the effect
and minimize the halo of color around the font edges.

You can find the online version of the tuner here:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearType/tuner/Step1.aspx

It is also available as a software download that can be installed (no
online connection needed to use the tuner). The link for the download can
be found in the right hand sidebar on this page:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with crossposting to a *few* related
newsgroups. He crossposted to three, which is just fine. Crossposting is
*far* better than the alternative some people select--multiposting, or
posting the same message to several newsgroups separately.
